How to Install on Linux - SAFE Sync

SafeSync

In this article, I will show you how to install Safe Sync on Ubuntu. If you have any other distributions of Linux then this guide will work as a good general guide.

Download the Safe Sync App from https://www.safedatastorage.co.uk/downloads

After successfully downloading the App, extract the zip file filecloudsync_linux_amd64.zip.

To extract files using the terminal, use the following command:-

Now, you will have a bunch of files in the extracted location.

Give execute permission to filecloudsyncstart.sh and filecloudsync file

Open terminal, go to the location where the FileCloud Sync files were extracted and then run filecloudsyncstart.sh. If this step does not work then please consult the guide below ˅˅˅˅˅

From here, it will prompt you to login with your username and password as well as the Server URL link

After that then you should see a icon in the top right hand corner. Right click on the icon and click on settings and you will be greeted to the familiar settings screen. Please note that the terminal used to run the process will need to be kept open and you will need to run the filecloudsyncstart.sh command everytime Filecloud Sync is exited.

For other Linux distros or Ubuntu 17.10 and higher, please follow the steps below:

  • Please download the libpng12 package using this command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linuxuprising/libpng12 sudo apt update sudo apt install libpng12-0
  • After step 1 above, when "./filecloudsyncstart.sh" script is run, if it shows a message "There appears to be no system tray support in your current environment", then your version of Ubuntu does not support system tray icons, and hence needs to be enabled by downloading the extensions.

  • Please go to the site "https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1031/topicons/"

Click on "Click here to install browser extension.", Click "Allow" and then "Add".

  • When you go back to the site, "https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1031/topicons/", you might see this message : "Although GNOME Shell integration extension is running, native host connector is not detected. Refer documentation for instructions about installing connector."

Click on the "documentation" link in the message above.

In this site, choose your Linux version, and execute the corresponding command in the terminal.

  • Go back to https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1031/topicons/ & refresh.
Click on the "Off/On" button to set it to On state.
    Click download and install option.

  •  After all the steps above have completed successfully, running the "./filecloudsyncstart.sh" script should start up Sync app.
